NATIONAL WEST VIRGINIA DAY

A wide range of West Virginia Day events are arranged. Some may last for a few days or be held on a weekend close to June 20 to enable families to attend. There are festivities at the State Capitol in Charleston and a range of historic sites.

Events include: local arts festivals; serving roadside refreshments, such as a birthday cake and lemonade; displays of Civil War era crafts and industrial processes; exhibitions on the state’s social, agricultural or industrial heritage; costume days and special guided tours; re-enactments of Civil War battles; the distribution of pins, caps and t-shirts promoting the state; and brunches, lunches and barbecues. Special offers on outdoor activities, such as swimming, rafting and guided hikes are also popular and serve to promote the beauty of the West Virginian landscape.

The original thirteen colonies created a total of eighteen states. Vermont once was a part of New York. Kentucky was also once included in the colony of Virginia. Tennessee was formerly part of North Carolina. Maine and Massachusetts were joined at one time. At Harpers Ferry, the North meets South. THE MOUNTAIN STATE

Also known as The Mountain State, West Virginia is dominated by three magnificent mountain ridges. The Allegheny, Appalachian, and the Blue Ridge Mountains also provide the state with seventy-eight percent forest over its total terrain. Within the rugged mountains, massive amounts of bituminous coal stores have made West Virginia the largest producer of coal east of the Mississippi River. Not only do the West Virginia hills create spectacular views and jobs, but their natural landscape lends to small, isolated populations with deep roots. Their culture and heritage can be heard infused in the thrum of a banjo or the lyrics of a gospel chorus. It also influences the warm earthy flavors of their cooking and inspires artisans to masterpieces.

Life moves at a slower pace in West Virginia. Time doesn’t exactly stand still, but if you’ll sit a while and listen to some of the folk stories, you might hear about John Henry and Big Ben Mountain. Someone could take you mushroom hunting, or they might fry up a few and share with you what they found that morning. It takes place at New River Gorge Bridge on the third Saturday of October. The bridge was completed on October 22, 1977, and it’s the longest steel arch bridge in the western hemisphere.

Project SEARCH was developed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, a research environment that fosters visionary thinking and innovation. It all began in 1996, when Erin Riehle was Director of Cincinnati Children’s Emergency Department. Erin felt that, because the hospital served individuals with developmental disabilities, it made sense that they should commit to hiring people in this group. She wondered if it would be possible to train people with developmental disabilities to fill some of the high- turnover, entry-level positions in her department, which involved complex and systematic tasks such as stocking supply cabinets. As a starting point, Erin presented her ideas to Susie Rutkowski, then the special education director at Great Oaks Career Campuses. Erin and Susie formed a partnership that was instantaneous, and together they launched Project SEARCH.

Since its inception, Project SEARCH has grown from a single program site at Cincinnati Children’s to a large and continuously expanding international network of sites. Project SEARCH’s primary objective is to secure competitive employment for people with disabilities.

•Monarch Robotic Surgery at Mon Health•

New innovation that holds promise to fight lung cancer is now in use at Mon Health Medical Center, with Dr. Parag Chaudhari’s first three robotic bronchoscopy cases successfully completed.

Used to view the inside of the lungs and obtain a tissue sample for biopsy, the goal is to enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis of small and hard-to-reach nodules in the periphery of the lung. This technology integrates the latest advancements in robotics, software, data science, and endoscopy (the use of small cameras and tools to enter the body through its natural opening).

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths worldwide, in part because it has no symptoms in its early stages,” Mon Health Pulmonologist and Critical Care Specialist, Dr. Parag Chaudhari explains. “Without this technology, it was almost impossible to take a biopsy of certain nodules – the target was in site but could not be reached. Being able to successfully complete the first three procedures here at Mon Health Medical Center is an incredible step in diagnosing lung cancer earlier and saving lives here in West Virginia.” 

The Monarch platform utilizes a familiar controller-like interface that physicians use to navigate the flexible robotic endoscope to the periphery of the lung with improved reach, vision, and control. Combining traditional endoscopic views into the lung with computer-assisted navigation based on 3D models of the patient’s lung anatomy, the Monarch platform provides physicians with continuous bronchoscope vision throughout the entire procedure.

Mon Health Medical Center is the first hospital in North Central West Virginia to utilize the Monarch platform.

Our marketing and advertising strategies are based on a core belief that success depends on partnerships with strong media and retail co-promotions. The annual State Fair attracts approximately 170,000 visitors and is the largest multi-day celebration in West Virginia. We have achieved the American Bus Association’s Top 100 event list and have been designated a Top 20 event in the Southeast.
