MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU Medicine announces a partnership with Project SEARCH to provide internship experience for students with special needs. While the program itself has existed since 1996, WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital will be the state’s first location to host the internship experience.

“Our mission is to serve the members of our community, and partnerships with organizations like Project SEARCH give us the opportunity to do that in an impactful way,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the West Virginia University Health System, said. “By providing these individuals with the skills they need to be more employable, we can help them be more independent and self-sufficient throughout their lifetimes.”

Project SEARCH will be coordinated and hosted by WVU Medicine and supported by the West Virginia Department of Education. Together, in partnership with other community organizations, they will create a one-year immersion experience that combines classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training through worksite rotations. Participating community organizations include:

  • the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services;
  • local school systems in Marion, Monongalia, Preston, and Taylor counties;
  • PACE Enterprises;
  • Goodwill North Central West Virginia;
  • the Fairmont Disability Action Center; and
  • the WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities.

“Our goal for all students is that they are able to graduate high school prepared for post-secondary success within higher education or the workforce,” Steven Paine, Ed.D., West Virginia Superintendent of Schools, said. “We are proud to partner with WVU Medicine and the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services to bring Project SEARCH to the Mountain State. This program will help us better equip students with significant cognitive disabilities for competitive post-secondary employment opportunities.”

Student interns apply to be a part of the program during their previous school year. They must pass a skills assessment evaluation and be interviewed as part of the acceptance process. Once accepted into the program, student interns report to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital instead of their home school district classroom for the entire school year. Student interns will rotate through a number of job roles at the hospital. The Project SEARCH Program serves as the student interns’ capstone educational experience and often leads to employment once the internships are complete.

The model involves an extensive period of training and career exploration, innovation adaptations, long-term job coaching, and continuous feedback from teachers, job coaches, and employers. Skills such as assembly, clerical duties, courier services, sterilization, stocking, and environmental skills will be taught through different host departments. As a result, student interns with significant intellectual disabilities can become employed in nontraditional, complex, and rewarding jobs at the completion of the training program.

West Virginia Botanic Garden at Tibbs Run Preserve

Imagine beautifully landscaped gardens reflecting on a shimmering pond. Trails weave from bright flowering meadows into a cool, shaded woodland. Streams sparkle beneath stately hemlocks. Some visitors stand silently, resting in the splendor of the vista; others energetically explore this wonderful community resource, the West Virginia Botanic Garden at Tibbs Run Preserve. Begun as only a dream in 2000, the WVBG is steadily becoming a reality on the 82-acre former Tibbs Run Reservoir property off the Tyrone Road in Monongalia County, WV. The former 15-acre basin will be transformed into two smaller pools with islands and aquatic plant displays. The old water works, still present, will stand as a link to the past. The WVBG will feature a large variety of plants appropriate to the region’s climate and soils in both designed and natural settings. Visitors will learn from these gardens in every season of the year. Most of the land is wooded, and much will remain undisturbed except for trail construction and some plant enhancement. The West Virginia Botanic Garden at Tibbs Run Preserve is a non-profit organization.

HOW ADULT & TEEN CHALLENGE USA APPROACHES RECOVERY

We at Adult & Teen Challenge USA are confident that a restored relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, can transform those who suffer from addiction into vibrant, free, and sober followers of the Lord.

We base the curriculum and community of our addiction recovery centers on God’s Word—the Bible. Addiction recovery centers that offer practical, appropriate, and accessible Bible-based courses facilitate the transition from alcoholism and substance abuse to a life of freedom in Christ. At Adult and Teen Challenge USA, we offer a chance to start over, become a new person, live a godly life, and find freedom through a restored purpose and an eternal hope. We do this through classes, individual study, personal mentoring, work ethics training, and involvement in the Christian community.

ADULT & TEEN CHALLENGE USA LOCATIONS

There are over 200 Adult & Teen Challenge USA residential programs throughout the United States. These Christian recovery centers offer a variety of programs that include drug addiction help, alcohol recovery, and services for youth, adults and families. Admission requirements, fees, and tuition costs vary from program to program. Teen Challenge USA (a 501(3)(c)) is diligent to provide cost-effective programs, however, the significant resources required to provide training, lodging, meals, supervision, and other expenses necessitate the generous support of our friends, faith communities, and society.

FAITH, COMMUNITY, AND HEALTH

Addiction destroys more than just the body, so it should be no surprise that Adult & Teen Challenge USA’s addiction recovery centers consider all aspects of their students’ lives. Because addiction starts as a way to fulfill a void that only God can fill, a strong relationship with the Lord is foundational to our program. We construct this foundation in our students by teaching them the Word of God and by placing them in an environment where they can bond with other growing disciples.

GIVE YOURSELF A SECOND CHANCE WITH ADULT & TEEN CHALLENGE USA

God forgives, and he will give you a second chance. But will you choose to give yourself a second chance? We hope that you do. If addiction rehabilitation centers have not worked for you, don’t discourage. Our addiction recovery centers work through the power of Christ, and in Him all things are possible.

EXPLORE NEW HEIGHTS

Following decades of Silicon Valley success leading brands like Intuit’s TurboTax to the top, one thing became clear to Brad D. Smith: his heart never left his home of West Virginia. With clear eyes and a deep love for the mountains that made him, Brad and his wife Alys began dreaming of a better place to innovate, one that inspires instead of burns out. Working together to reach a higher place, one that truly is #AlmostHeaven, Ascend West Virginia was founded. Our program is simple: We want you to experience work-life balance in a brand new way– through community, purpose and the outdoors you can bring your remote work to in the mountains of West Virginia.

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

There is a reason that John Denver coined West Virginia as Almost Heaven in his 1971 hit song Take Me Home, Country Roads. Come get a taste of life in Almost Heaven. With global cuisines, rich mountain culture and outdoor adventures, our Ascend WV towns are the home you have been longing for.
