•Mon Marion Neighborhood Hospital Ribbon Cutting•

Mon Health System held a ribbon cutting today for its new Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital in Marion County.

In addition to local and state dignitaries and community providers, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va and U.S. Health and Human Resources Secretary Xavier Becerra were on hand to applaud Mon Health’s commitment to improve community access to care that bucks the nationwide trend of rural hospitals closing. 

“From the very beginning, the people of White Hall and greater Marion County community welcomed us with wide open arms, and we cannot express strongly enough how grateful we are for the overwhelming support,” said Mon Health System President & CEO David Goldberg. “There is a clear desire in this region for more high-quality, patient-centered health care options, and we are confident that when our hospital opens, it will exceed your expectations in every way.” 

The Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital is what’s known as a small-format hospital, meaning that it offers a smaller number of beds than a traditional hospital, but still brings high-level services such as a 24-hour emergency care unit, overnight hospitalization services, on-site diagnostic testing and imaging, and laboratory services and 10 inpatient beds. Located at the Middletown Commons in White Hall, Mon Health Marion Neighborhood Hospital will officially open its doors to the community on December 14. 

•Tito’s 25th Year Anniversary | Tito’s Homemade Vodka•

Tito Beveridge wasn’t always known as “the vodka guy.” Born and raised in San Antonio, Tito went to Vanderbilt for a year before returning to Texas to attend UT (University of Texas at Austin), where he graduated with degrees in geology and geophysics. After college he got into the oil and gas business. He did that in Texas, and then found himself down in Venezuela and Colombia running heli-portable dynamite seismic crews. He came back to Texas, again, and started a drilling company in Houston. Eventually he got “tired of chasing the buck,” and decided to move to Austin.

In Austin, Tito got into ground water geology, and then thought he would give the mortgage business a try. It was around this time, in ’92 or ’93, when he started making flavored vodka as gifts for friends. One night he was at a party and a stranger came up to him and said “Hey you’re the vodka guy,” and he said “No, contraire, I am the mortgage guy. “ But, that really got Tito thinking…

When mortgage rates went up a couple points, he started going to liquor stores to ask the owners and managers if they would buy his flavored vodkas. They all turned him down saying, “No, go look at all the dust on the shoulders of those bottles there!” But then they told Tito that if he could make a vodka that was so smooth you could drink it straight then he might have something.

So, naturally, Tito, who had never distilled anything in his life, asked them how one might do that. They said, “Well I don’t know, you’re the guy who wants to get in the vodka business!”

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at West Virginia University, known as OLLI@WVU, provides programs and educational opportunities designed for adults 50 and over. Free from the pressures of tests and grades, this is learning simply for the joy of it. OLLI at WVU, affiliated with the School of Public Health, is a membership organization that recognizes the unique experiences, capabilities, and wisdom of mature members of the community. OLLI emphasizes the sharing of ideas through peer learning, member participation, and collaborative leadership.

During four terms each year, OLLI offers courses, lectures, seminars and field trips in such areas as music, literature, art, science, politics, nature, history, health, medicine, and economics. Live drama, movies, and special interest groups add to the choices.
